The Elementary String Orchestra is our first ensemble for string players to join when they are recommended by their teacher - normally in their third year of learning. Members develop their ability to follow the conductor and to listen to the other sections in order to play well together as an orchestra. The pieces range from traditional tunes such as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to modern compositions by leading string composers such as Kathy Blackwell. Players are encouraged to identify and describe the different elements of the music in the pieces being rehearsed and we even have themed art work sessions before rehearsals most weeks .
Pupils who maybe felt a little nervous at their first rehearsal soon realise that being part of the Elementary Strings is actually great fun, and the friendly atmosphere is engaging and confidence-building. Each term culminates with a concert performance to friends and family, where the young string players share the results of the term's work - with plenty of Zing!
