Encourage them to show you what they are learning.

Try to find a regular time and place that they can play their instrument.

Be a positive part of playing – sit with the young musician whilst they play, if possible.

Help them to be patient. Learning to play an instrument takes a long time.

Ask their teacher if you have any questions about the instrument or what they are learning. 

Don’t worry if something goes wrong with the instrument – we can fix things or get you a replacement instrument.

Give lots of praise, things don’t always sound great at the beginning so try not to comment on unusual sounds!

Remind them that everything worth doing takes time and effort.
