Take part in a City wide performance as we Sing for Hull

Welcome to Sing for Hull

We have created this project for all of our schools, families, workplaces and communities to come together once a week to all sing a song at the same time – together.

We’ve created a virtual band – The Albemarle Broadband for you to sing along with.

Over the next four days there is a different daily activity that helps you prepare for the performance at 13:30 on Friday.

So, in these challenging times, let’s celebrate all that is good about Hull, and “Sing for Hull!”

Week 11: Here Comes the Sun

Resources

Day 1

Vocal warm-ups and learn the song!

This week we have the 1969 hit ‘Here Comes the Sun’ by George Harrison. Join Stephanie and Sean Miller as they take you through the song with its catchy lyrics and some irregular time signatures – this one’s for all you Beatles fans!

Extra fun fact is that Sean is a keen horticulturalist – check out his sunflower on the piano!

Day 2

Tom is back with more ideas for you on how to compose your own melodies.

The new composition contest to create music for the Music Service Graphics is underway and you can get your music heard by uploading on our ‘My Music‘ page of the website! Your composition can be in any format using any instruments and any style: a recording, a notated piece, an electronic piece, a computer composition, a picture & more.

Day 3

Stephanie Miller introduces today’s episode working on ‘Here Comes the Sun’.
With a little thanks to Eric Clapton and the sun . . . George Harrison’s inspiration for this great song!
Stephanie gets us going with the ‘tricky’ bits where the rhythm changes – see if you can do your movements in time!
Simplicity is key to this song with its small range of notes and cleverly chosen words that fit so naturally – and talking of keys, listen out for why we are learning this song in a different key to the one that George Harrison used.

Day 4

Instruments of the week – Trumpet, Flugel Horn and Cornet

Suzanne Crowther and Richard Shaw introduce this week’s episode.
Starting with the trumpet Suzanne shows how the sound is made and how the air speeds, lip shapes and using the valves create the different pitches.

We hear about the history of the trumpet and its likely origins before learning how it is used is so many musical settings: orchestras, windbands, military bands, film music, musical theatre, jazz ensembles, big bands & pop bands!

Day 2

Make and Create – Your Own Accompaniment Shelley is back! . . . and so is James! (see below)

Today we look at how to make accompaniments on the piano using simple chords. Shelley tells us about Alesso, the writer of this week’s hit, who had a meteoric rise to fame through working really hard to learn the art of DJing and went from nothing to being in the top 100 in the world in a matter of years!

Day 3

Stephanie Miller introduces today’s episode working on ‘Heroes (We Could Be)’.

We learn how the lyricist (song writer) of this hit Tove Lo was inspired by watching an episode of the TV series Heroes (2006 – 2010) and how it fueled her imagination to write this song. Stephanie gets you warmed up and links some of the singing exercises to yesterday’s Make and Create episode on the four chords used in this piece!

Day 4

Instrument of the week – Violin

Rachael England introduces this week’s episode (with a little help from Woofgang!) explaining the different roles of the violin and the many musical styles it is used for. While we learn what cats, tennis rackets, doctors, cows and violin strings all have in common, we are treated to some great violin playing as Rachael demonstrates its versatility!
